SLIC Property Development: 2 Story New Construction

Pandemic. Construction. Beginnings.

During the summer before my senior year at Texas A&M, I found myself working on coordinating the building of a new two-story duplex in Houston, TX during a pandemic.

Combining Backgrounds

I’ve grown up working on remodeling and renovating old homes. It taught me a lot about how to plan ahead, how the tools of the trade work, and what is easy to fix, and what is not so easy to fix…

My engineering education and other work experience were able to work in conjunction with this experience to allow me to bring a unique viewpoint in coordinating the new construction project.

During this project, I was able to help coordinate the trades, manage the build timeline, and figure out solutions to new problems as they arose daily.

What I Learned

Being a part of a project that turned dirt into someone’s home was an amazing learning experience for me. I was taught about some of the codes that must be followed in Texas, timeline management of all the trades, and the true cost of “just one more delay.”

At university when an assignment doesn’t get done when you plan it cost you a few hours of sleep, however, when projects get to the scale of building a real product, every delay costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
